Chinatown 03:09
Asher Weiss "Chinatown" © 2008 I understate Make things less than they are Distance is hard Wish you didn’t live so far South Station bound On a crowded Chinatown Time is standing still I count the miles down ‘Til I’m with you Time flew Hello goodbye Feels like I have to leave as I arrive One last kiss as long as I’m alive Got a Chinatown bus ride to survive I don’t belong When I’m all alone But Brooklyn’s familiar That’s why I call it home Homeward bound On a crowded Chinatown Time is standing still I count the days down ‘Til I’m with you Time flew Hello goodbye Felt like I had to leave as I arrived That kiss you gave is keeping me alive Till there’s another Chinatown to survive Absence does not make The heart grow fonder It makes for roving eyes And minds that wander

In It For Me 02:29
Asher Weiss “In it for me” © 2008 That thing Of which you will not speak Lurks in the shadows we cast Each time we meet. You know that your silence cannot erase memory But don’t worry darling My memory’s short If there’s something in it for me Can’t let Your vows stand in our way And passion trumps reason Trumps all the things you might say. And secrets wilt flowers and stain white embroidery But don’t worry darling A secret’s a secret If there’s something in it for me While the shadows grow longer I’ll wait for you You’ll do what I want babe When I want you to The past Belongs in the past for good And I would hate him to know your sins As only I should You hope that together forever is what you will be But don’t worry darling Hope is a treasure Don’t worry darling Never say never Don’t worry darling Forever’s forever If there’s something in it for me

Asher Weiss “They won’t care anyway” © 2008 Food in little pieces Is strewn about the plate Cut up an endless day. Open arms of excess Await hidden from shame High comes down dry Always weigh the same Feasting on the pain Siren songs echo Off the porcelain Wail above the den Eye sore in the mirror Hand sores all in vain High comes down dry Always weigh the same Feasting on the pain Pain is all this is Know no other way to live Pain is all this is Know no other way to live Smile is perfect Hides stained teeth Makes everything ok People see it all And have nothing to say High comes down dry Yeah, always weigh the same Feasting on the pain Yeah, always weigh the same Feasting on the pain No, they won’t care anyway It can be no other way.

Asher Weiss “Better to Burn” © 2008 A man went for a walk To hear himself talk To himself About himself And being taken for granted “If I die here today who will know my name? Is it better to burn out or to fade away?” He saw a house engulfed in flame A child’s screams overcame His deadly fear Of going inside “It’s better to stand up than to walk away. It’s better to burn out than to fade away.” “Cause if I die here today People are sure to say Self-sacrifice is a hero’s way And it’s better to burn out Than to fade away Better to burn out Than to fade away.” He felt the heat and had to say “It’s better to burn out than to fade away.” But as he waded through the flames He rifled through the names of those he loved And prayed to God above He hadn’t taken life for granted “Have I entered a house or a grave? Is it better to burn up or to fade away?” “Cause if I die here today People are sure to say Self-sacrifice is a hero’s way But should I be a hero today? Is it better to burn up or to fade away? Should I be a hero today? Is it better to burn out or to fade away?”

Asher Weiss “Something to Believe In” © 2008 This time she thought Things can't be broken Someone whose love Is unconditional But she's a delicate glass That fell from the shelf And shattered his love for her Who could not love herself "Is there something to believe in?" She asked through tears Blurring what she could see. "It's not an if," she said "It's a question of when I am forsaken God will take me in." He who had left her Could not dispute this claim And though he was sorry He would not accept the blame. "I've got something to believe in!" She wanted him to know. The split seemed so right When it occurred But now he could not sleep His thoughts consumed by her "Memory's short And we will never be I must forget him and Live my life" thought she “I've got something to believe in!” She wanted him to know.

What I Want 02:40
Asher Weiss What I Want © 2009 I’m not the kind Who gets what I want If I get what I want I do not want it Want it You’re not the kind Who knows what you want If you knew what you want Why would you be here With me Is there a place where the grass is green? Where things are really as they seem? He’s not the kind Who suffers from want If we had what he had We’d all be happy Happy Is there a place where the grass is green? Where things are really as they seem? Is there a place where the grass is green? Where things are really as they seem? But I’m not the kind Who gets what I want If I get what I want I do not want it Want it

about

Asher Weiss grew up studying classical violin and listening to his dad's '60s folk collection. Sometime in high school, when he was immersed in the musical renaissance of the late '80s/early '90s, he began to strum a guitar. In college, he majored in religion. People would ask (in a tone ranging from puzzlement to disapproval), "A degree in religion!!? What can you do with that?" To which he would respond, "Play guitar, of course."

Indeed, guitar had become his primary instrument, but he was not writing songs. Far from it. Instead, he had fallen in love with chord voicings and the harmonic possibilities that only jazz guitar could offer. The jazz education was valuable to be sure, but it took him far too long to realize that his future lay in songwriting, not in practicing scales and arpeggios eight hours a day.

Before dedicating himself to songwriting, Asher played as a sideman in several NYC bands. Each one brought him closer to a songwriting role. When the last of these ended, he was out of options, so he decided to write his own songs. Singing followed.

Asher's first recording, "Bushwick to Boston," is so named because its six songs were conceived on the road-- the Chinatown Bus specifically-- from Bushwick, Brooklyn, to Boston, Mass, over a six month period. The songs are folk-based, but are produced with a nod towards a number of other genres. Lyrically, according to one of his friends, they are best described as "songs about life."
